ADU & Remodel Wiring in Ventura County
Planning an ADU, garage conversion, addition, or kitchen remodel? We connect you with one independent local electrician.
Electrical planning should start early in any ADU or remodel, because the home's service size, panel space, and meter arrangement can affect the whole design and budget. Kitchens, bathrooms, and ADUs add heavy loads, and California code adds requirements for outlets, protection, and energy use.
ADUs: the big electrical questions
- Is there enough capacity? An ADU with its own kitchen, heat pump, water heater, and laundry can add significant load. A load calculation decides whether the main service needs an upgrade. See panel upgrades.
- Subpanel or separate meter? Many ADUs are fed from a subpanel off the main house. A separate SCE meter is sometimes possible, but it involves utility requirements and more cost. Ask early.
- Trenching: detached ADUs usually need a buried feeder from the main panel. Distance affects wire size and cost.
- Solar: under California's energy code, many newly constructed detached ADUs must include solar, with some exceptions. Garage conversions and attached ADUs may be treated differently. Your designer and building department can confirm.
- Smoke and CO alarms are required in new living spaces.
Garage conversions
Garages often have a single circuit, old wiring, and the main panel on an exterior wall. Converting one to living space usually means new circuits, new outlets spaced to code, GFCI and AFCI protection where required, lighting that meets energy rules, and sometimes relocating the laundry or water heater. If the garage held your EV charger, plan a new location.
Kitchen and bathroom remodels
Modern kitchens need multiple dedicated circuits for countertop outlets and appliances, GFCI protection for countertop outlets, and often a 240-volt circuit for an electric or induction range. Bathrooms need GFCI protection and usually a dedicated circuit, plus a properly vented exhaust fan. Switching from gas to electric appliances can change your panel needs. Recent California energy codes have also required new homes to be prepared for electric appliances.
Do remodels need permits?
Yes, ADUs, additions, and most remodels with electrical changes need permits from your city or the County of Ventura. State law has streamlined ADU approvals, but permits and inspections are still required. Inspections typically include a "rough" inspection before walls close and a final inspection.
Working with a general contractor
On most ADUs and remodels, the electrician works under or alongside a general contractor. Ask who pulls the electrical permit, who coordinates with SCE for any service change, and who is responsible for the load calculation. If you're hiring trades directly, get each scope in writing.
Smart choices while walls are open
- Add circuits and outlets where you'll actually need them, including for future EV charging.
- Run low-voltage cabling for internet and security.
- Plan lighting controls and switch locations.
- Consider whole-home surge protection.
- Label the panel clearly when the job is done.
Common electrical surprises in remodels
- A panel that looked adequate turns out to be a brand or condition that needs replacement.
- Old wiring discovered inside opened walls that can't be extended safely.
- Longer-than-expected trench runs to a detached ADU.
- Utility requirements for a service upgrade or meter relocation that add time.
- Smoke and CO alarm upgrades required throughout the existing house.
Building a contingency into the budget and asking the electrician to look for these early reduces the chance of a stalled project.
Living in the house during a remodel
Power may be off to parts of the house during rough wiring and panel work. Ask the electrician for the schedule, plan for refrigeration and work-from-home needs, and keep temporary cords out of walkways and away from water.
Hiring tips
Check the contractor's license at cslb.ca.gov, ask for proof of liability insurance and workers' compensation, and get a written electrical scope with the panel or subpanel size, circuits, fixtures, permit, and utility work. See also lighting installation and EV chargers.
Frequently asked questions
Does an ADU need its own electric meter?
Not necessarily. Many ADUs are fed by a subpanel from the main house. A separate meter is sometimes possible but adds utility requirements and cost. Ask your electrician and SCE.
Do new ADUs in California need solar?
Many newly constructed detached ADUs must include solar under the state energy code, with exceptions. Garage conversions and attached units may differ. Confirm with your designer and building department.
When should I involve an electrician in a remodel?
Early, before the design is final. Service capacity, panel space, and circuit needs can change layout and budget.
