Frequently Asked Questions
How our no-cost electrician referral service works, plus common questions about panels, EV chargers, outages, and electrical safety.
Quick answers about how Ventura County Electrician Pros works. For questions about a specific job, the provider you are connected with is the right person to ask.
How the service works
Is Ventura County Electrician Pros a contractor?
No. Ventura County Electrician Pros is a no-cost referral service. We connect you with an independent local electrician, and that business does the work, gives the estimate, and is responsible for its own license, permits, insurance, and workmanship.
How much does it cost to use this service?
Nothing. Using the website and submitting a request cost you nothing, and you are never obligated to hire anyone. Providers support the service. See our referral disclosure for details.
How many electricians will contact me?
We share your request with one independent local electrician who serves your area.
Which areas do you cover?
All of Ventura County, including Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park, Westlake, Oak Park, Simi Valley, Moorpark, Camarillo, Ventura, Oxnard, Port Hueneme, Santa Paula, Fillmore, Ojai, and unincorporated communities.
How do I check an electrician?
Ask for the California contractor license number (electrical contractors hold a C-10) and look it up at cslb.ca.gov, ask for proof of liability insurance and workers' compensation, and get a written estimate before work starts.
Electrical safety and common questions
Is it safe to fix an outlet or switch myself?
We don't recommend it. Electrical work carries shock and fire risks, and most of it requires a permit. Resetting a tripped breaker once is the only hands-on step we suggest.
What is a Public Safety Power Shutoff?
It's when SCE turns off power in high fire-risk areas during dangerous weather to reduce wildfire risk. Check SCE for notifications and plan safe backup power.
Can I run a generator in my garage?
No. Generator exhaust contains carbon monoxide, which can kill. Run generators outdoors, well away from windows, doors, and vents.
Do I need a permit for electrical work?
Most electrical work beyond simple like-for-like replacements needs a permit from your city or the County of Ventura. Your electrician should know and pull it.
Who do I call about my electric meter?
SCE owns the meter and the lines to your house. Contact SCE for problems with those. An electrician handles the panel and wiring inside your home.
Why do my outdoor outlets trip when it rains?
Moisture is getting into an outlet, fixture, or connection and causing a ground fault. An electrician can find and fix the source.
